The first action to take when dealing with certain injuries is the application of ice. It is an important initial step in the treatment for acute injuries such as strains, contusions, tendon tears, and overuse injuries. It is an element of the RICE (the acronym for rest, ice application, compression, and elevation) treatment protocol.

Rather than putting an ice pack over the injury, you may make yourself an ice cup to perform a cryotherapy icing treatment. Cryotherapy are a type of massage therapy in which enables you to apply cold therapy directly to the portion of pain and inflammation. The ice both reduces the pain sensations and blood flow, and helps to gradually restore the soft tissue in a manner similar to a massage.


Direct icing of the injury is considered ice therapy. It may help:

  • Relieve pain
  • Prevent swelling as much as possible.
  • Reduce inflammation to minimize pain.
  • Promotes healing
  • Trigger points desensitize.


How to Do an Ice Massage

Ice therapy can be performed at home only if you follow some simple safety guidelines to prevent overworking the injury:

  1. Place a small paper cup three-quarters of the way with water in the freezer until frozen.
  2. Remove around an inch from the base of the cup, revealing the inner part of the ice. The remainder of that cup is for is for you to hold on to.
  3. Gently massage the area with the ice cube in a circular pattern. Never let the ice cube freeze into the same place.
  4. Focus on massaging soft tissues rather than on bones to maximize the healing potential.
  5. As the ice begins to melt, peel off further paper as needed.
  6. You will experience sensations similar to those of a tissue massage starting with intense cold, followed by burning, aching, and eventually numbness. Pause the massage once numbness is obtained, generally no more than ten minutes to avoid frostbite.
  7. Repeat the ice therapy two to five times a day. Give yourself at least sixty minutes between massages to allow the superficial skin temperature to return to normal.


If you don't want to make your own ice cups, you can purchase reusable plastic cryo-cups with rounded bottoms online. Just fill the cup with water, freeze, and apply directly to the injury. The rounded bottom on the cup makes it easier to hold, making the application much easier.


Ice Massage Precautions

When receiving an ice massage, it is important to be aware of certain precautions in order to avoid injury.

1.When directly applying an ice pack to the skin on the back, be sure to move the ice pack in a slow and circular motion to avoid staying in one place for too long.

2. During every ice-massage session, limit yourself to no more than five minutes.

3. Make sure not to fall asleep with the ice still on the skin.

4. Individuals with certain medical conditions, such as sufferers of rheumatoid arthritis, Raynaud's disease, cold allergies, paralysis, or areas of poor sensation, should avoid the use of ice applications to tender areas of the body.


How to apply cold therapy

Although placing ice or frozen products on your skin can reduce pain, it can also damage your skin. It's best to wrap the cold item in a thin towel to protect it from the direct cold, especially if you are using gel packs straight from the freezer. Apply the ice pack or gel pack for about 10 to 20 minutes at least a few times every day. Keep an eye on your skin as soon as you begin using the cold therapy to watch for skin discomfort.

Combining cold therapy with other approaches may be used for pain management.

  • Rest as much as possible. Abstain from actions that may increase your pain.
  • Applying pressure will help stop swelling and pain, letting you stabilize the affected area
  • Elevate your injured body part. Sit up, or squat over what is needed.
  • Pain medicine. Over-the-counter products can help ease pain.
  • Stretching and strengthening exercises can be helpful if you experience an injury. Consult your doctor to determine the types of exercises that would be best for you.


Stop applying ice once you no longer feel any sensation in the region where you apply it. If cold therapy does not help your discomfort diminish, see a medical professional. You should also avoid applying ice to your skin if you have certain health issues, such as diabetes, which affect your ability to discern tissue damage.


Types of Ice Packs and Cold Packs

  • To make a towel into a cold pack, fold a damp towel and place it in a plastic bag before putting it in the freezer for 10 to 20 minutes. After the towel has frozen, remove it from the bag and place it on the affected area.
  • Sponge. Wet a sponge and put it in the freezer. Once it's frozen, take it out and put it in a baggie, then wrap it in a sock or a towel before using it.
  • Another alternative is to fill a sock with rice and keep it in the freezer, as rice will get as cold as ice but doesn't melt when used.

How long does it take to ice an injury?

Ice should be applied to the injury ASAP. Then, it should be reapplied two or three times daily, for 10 to 20 minutes at a time, for several days. To make sure that cold does not cause persistent swelling, place a towel between the ice pack and the injured area.
