Interferential (IF) stimulation is probably the most effective form of electrotherapy for chronic pain. The major difference between using interferential stimulation versus TENS unit is with interferential therapy the patient has what is deemed "carryover pan relief" after the initial treatment and any subsequent treatments and allows deeper tissue penetrations. Tens treatments are generally effective only while the unit is actually being used.
