Stay Safe in the Sun: Our Guide to a Healthy Summer
Warm days of summer are always welcome. Unfortunately, the heat during this time of year can be dangerous to your health and well-being. Remembering a few tips can keep you healthy this summer so all of the memories you make can be good ones.
Stay Hydrated
The most dangerous part of summer is dehydration due to heat. Be sure to stay well hydrated by getting plenty of fluids. Avoid those drinks that have excessive amounts of sugar, caffeine or alcohol. Drink at least eight glasses per day, but you may need much more if you are spending a great deal of time outside and/or are engaging in physical activities. If you have children or are the caretaker of an elderly person, make sure they are consuming sufficient fluids as well.
Use Sunblock
It should go without saying that sunblock is a necessity when you will be exposed to the sun's harmful rays. Look for a sunblock that has an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply often, especially if sweating or swimming. Even waterproof sunblock must be regularly reapplied. Likewise, sunblock is not just for outdoors. Use sunblock anytime you will be on long car rides or if you are seated near a window most of the day.
Practice Car Safety
On average, 37 children die from heatstroke each year in the United States. A staggeringly high number of those deaths are due to being locked in cars. This is completely preventable. Ensure young children do not play in cars when unattended. You can do this by keeping your car locked at all times. You must also always be very aware of children riding in cars. Never leave them in the car alone at any time or for any reason.
Keep these important tips in mind for a safe, happy and healthy summer.
