Continuous Passive Motion Unit

Continuous passive motion (CPM) devices are used during the first phase of rehabilitation following a soft tissue surgical procedure or trauma. CPM devices constantly move a joint through a controlled range of motion, which is dependent upon the joint. CPM devices gradually help users increase the range of motion over time.

CPM is used after various types of reconstructive joint surgeries such as knee replacement and ACL reconstruction. Using a CPM device can speed recovery times by allowing for better diffusion of nutrients into damaged cartilage as well as diffusion of other products out. CPM also prevents build up of scar tissue, which when present, can decrease a joint's range of motion.
